Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-192-0333
With a virtually non-existent transition this bent Dublin from Tonni Nielsen calls to mind the Horn design, curling upward in a dramatic flare from shank end to rim. The lower flanks of the shank come to sleek ridgelines, dissipating expertly as they follow the curve of the bowl. They add just the right amount of rigidity and firmness to the shape without disrupting the sinuous softness of the overall profile. The rim echoes this aesthetic — marked by a crisp ridgeline but inflated in classic Danish-style to juxtapose hard and soft lines.
Tonni approaches stem work as part of the pipe's full composition, and that's especially evident in the way he's fitted this piece's stem to the briar. Instead of a mount construction or flush saddle stem, Nielsen has deftly curled and raised the end of the shank, perfectly matching it with the base of the stem. It lends the illusion that the vulcanite is attached to the briar, the junction seamless to beautifully marry the two elements of the composition.-Truett Smith
