Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Paneled Bent Dublin with Boxwood (Viking)
Product Number: 002-192-0338
Contradicting its own organic curvature, this Dublin from the inimitable Tonni Nielsen incorporates broad, structural panels that somehow only support the shape rather than adding a contrasting, architectural impression. In generously rounded, vaguely Foursquare orientation, the fore and aft panels are teardrop oval ably displaying remarkably broad swaths of tight birdseye, while the horizontal grain of the sides climb the bowl and sweep over the rim in an independent curve from left heel to right heel. That same stummel-long curvature is evident in the undersweep from lower shank to far bowl.
At the transition, we see more structure, though still resonating with the organic disposition of the overall composition. The shank is tightly transitioned along its top, harmonizing with the soft, vertical ridgelines defining the panels. The shank then curves upward slightly and with almost subliminal expansion to the pale boxwood accent attached to the base of the mouthpiece. That boxwood undulates in echoing organicism for visual appreciation, appearing to encase the more narrowly diametered mouthpiece, which curves upward in an understated, half-saddle configuration. The creative combination of elements in this piece are to be marveled at, and whatever collector finds him- or herself with this Dublin in their collection will have a cherished heirloom to fulfill their deepest need for art appreciation in a utilitarian smoking instrument.- Chuck Stanion
