Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Stallion with Plateau (8)

Product Number: 002-192-0178

This particularly lovely pipe from Tonni Nielsen has captured my attention for a variety of reasons. First, I'm really digging the way he used the briar's plateau for the bowl's rim and the shank face. Especially because of the shaping, and the long tooth of the shank, the plateau creates a sensation of continuity between the two distinct parts. The grain, here brought to life in a nice contrast-stain, adds to that continuum; another reason I'm fond of the piece. I'm certainly of the school that a great shape trumps a killer grain, but when the two can work so cohesively, as they do here, that's just fantastic. I like the size, the weight, and I like the look. This is another winner, as far as I'm concerned.
