Tonni Nielsen: Smooth Freehand Tomato with Horn (7)

Product Number: 002-192-0171

This is a delightful, elegant little number from Tonni Nielsen. Here the Danish carver shows off his attention for detail, having cut the piece so that, from behind, the horn shank facing appears to be somewhat tear-shaped. This works interestingly from both sides of the pipe, with one flank being rounded off through the shank, while the other side of the shank boasts a sharp line through to the bowl transition. Both round and sharp lines meet to flower a rather fetching tomato shape that fits quite nicely in the palm. The block was cut to expose dark, mottled birdseye for the belly of the piece, leaving the straight grain to wash around the bowl horizontally.
