Tsuge: Sandblasted Bent Billiard with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-099-7867
Pipe makers embraced the use of bamboo as a briar alternative during and right after World War II, when the material was easier to obtain. That notion caught on, once the pipe community appreciated its value, with the medium becoming popular as accents on high-end, artisanal pipes and some of the more pricey mass-produced lines. Because bamboo requires a good bit more work through the selection process, tweaking the shanks to accommodate it, etc., many workshops shy away from the pale material. Not Tsuge. The Japanese workshop always seems up to a challenge and the results are stunning, as in this bent Billiard. Two knuckles of bamboo extend the shank, adding extra organicism and contrasting the dark sandblast, while a gently downturned saddle stem tops things off in this lightweight, handsome pipe.-Angela Robertson
