Tsuge: System Calabash Sandblasted Bent Billiard Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-099-10957

Japanese marque Tsuge was founded in 1936 by Kyoichiro Tsuge, carving mainly ivory cigarette holders. After World War II, Kyoichiro transitioned to pipe making, growing the brand into the largest pipe company in all of Japan. Tsuge regularly produces stylish and intriguing takes on classic profiles that reinterpret timeless outlines in a variety of ways. The System Calabash is one of the brand's most striking reinterpretations of such classic pieces, though it retains all of the vital elements that make the Calabash so iconic. Here, the chamber cap is rendered from briar, rather than the more traditional meerschaum, and it attaches to a body of the same via fine threading that screws into an aluminum fitment at the bowl's waist. The rim of the chamber cap is lined with its own aluminum threading, protecting the briar from charring and accepting a screw-top-style cap that, while not in use to cover the chamber, mounts to the bowl's underside and makes for an extremely stable sitting surface. The transition is tight, giving way to a thick, short, tapering shank capped with yet another aluminum mount that reinforces the push-style fitment of a black acrylic saddle stem. This particular piece is dressed in a crisp, inky sandblast and showcases handsome grain, with rich contrast offered thanks to the myriad metal accents.
