Viktor Yashtylov: Smooth Squat Tomato (Magnetic Stem)
Product Number: 002-523-0017
An interesting combination of implied forward motion, low-oriented gesture and Danish-inspired shaping, this full-bodied Tomato from Viktor Yashtylov is a stellar smoker, and not one without the Russian carver's characteristically detailed, seriously organic sense of style. Indeed, there's an emphasis on width here, with the dirigible-like corpulence up front giving way to an soft, undulating rim gently faced-off around the chamber. And though Viktor's shaping and stem work really seems to catch the eye, there's a subtle detail at play here that should certainly excite esteemed collectors.
Viktor's made fine use of an Ivarsson-esque teardrop line at the shank, though the way he went about it is quite unique. Rather than allowing form to culminate in a crisp, single ridge, Viktor opted to guide the region into something of a comma or apostrophe-shape, serving to more distinctly define the guiding line in profile, like that of the pinched ridge you might see from the likes of Tokutomi, though executed in a much more precise (as opposed to overtly natural-esque) way. Beautifully married to one of Viktor's gorgeous magnetic stems by way of a convex base and concave mortise-face, this fellow is likely to become a standout amongst your briars.- Daniel Bumgardner
