Viktor Yashtylov: Smooth Poker with Olivewood (Magnetic Stem) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-523-0025
When viewed completely in profile, it's difficult to determine the proper orientation of this piece from Viktor Yashtylov. Typically, most pipes are symmetrical when viewed from above, the left and right flanks mirroring each other, but here, the Russian carver adds further symmetry between the top and bottom of the piece — the only interruption being the slanted nature of the shank face.
Viktor has played with this type of symmetry before in a similar piece we received from him. Both designs are renditions of the Poker, but this piece opts for smooth, supple curves in place of the previous one's hard-lined paneling. Such a change gives this iteration a softer, more organic disposition, calling to mind the front of a hammerhead shark, while the other's facets were more reminiscent of Thor's hammer, Mjölnir. Showcasing a stunning cross-cut orientation, the grain is brought out by a smoky walnut contrast stain, the lighter hues of which match well with the natural tones of the olivewood accent. The stem, then, fits into the olivewood via magnets — a signature feature of Yashtylov's pipes and one that offers a hassle-free fit.
