And yes, what you're looking at right now is in fact a reverse-Calabash combined with a "lightning stopper," which has been serving beer aficionados faithfully for generations. Well, now it can serve pipe aficionados, too, serving as quite a convenient style of mount — easy to open, self-sealing, no fiddling with mortise-fit, and, it suddenly occurs to me, like the old army mount, allowing the briar to be readily and safely cleaned even when still hot.
