Werner Mummert: Smooth Reverse Calabash Travel Pipe Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-560-0145
For fans of Werner Mummert's work, this Reverse Calabash Travel Pipe should be readily recognizable of the artisan, who has been producing Reverse Calabash Barrels for some time. While the Barrel shape is defined by its solid stretch of cylindrical stummel, this Travel pipe goes a step further, attempting to marry convenience with minimalism.
This is a pipe that exists in three distinct parts: The bowl, the stem, and a cylindrical portion between that, due to its design, cannot rightly be called either a "stummel" or a "shank." This cylinder is entirely hollow, and what appears to be a beadline at its rear is, in fact, a seam. This rear portion separates from the rest of the cylinder, opening the entire item up. This is what gives it the "Travel Pipe" name — this pipe's bowl can be detached and stored inside, with space enough that the stem can be re-attached on the inner portion of the removable cap. With both of these pieces stored inside, the pipe becomes easy enough to tuck into a bag without fear of damage to its integral components. Even a good shake doesn't produce any rattling from the stem or bowl moving inside their home.
All in all, it's a unique design from Mummert. The exterior of both cylinder and bowl are dressed in a light stain and smooth, low-polish finish, and its clean lines give a minimalist impression that suits its utilitarian nature with aplomb. Excellent work!
