Werner Mummert: Sandblasted Lovat with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-560-0179
We've encountered a fair number of pieces where German carver Werner Mummert opted to forego his characteristic Cubist inclinations in favor of something a bit more classic. This Lovat is one of those, and despite its lack of crisp linework or sharp facets, it still showcases the artisan's penchant for playfulness. Werner's lent a bit of plumpness to the bowl in profile, making use of a very gradual sense of taper about the shank from stem junction to transition to guide the eye to its broad curves. He managed to coax a ridiculously impressive sandblast from the briar as well, with a well-defined concentric spread of ring-grain climbing up all flanks, dressed in a smokey contrast stain. Going one further, Werner lent a broad accent of creamy ivorite at the stem base, serving to reinforce its organic style.- Daniel Bumgardner
