Werner Mummert: Smooth Morta Bulldog with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-560-0199
This is Werner Mummert's signature rendition of the Bulldog. It features the shape's defining features — a diamond shank, tapered rim, and wrapping beadlines — but the German carver's interpretation is decidedly more geometric and exudes a firm-lined, angular stance. Such design cues are most apparent in the heel, as the base of the bowl slopes upward along the flanks, like the hull of a ship, and the front of the heel comes to a crisp point in profile, continuing the bottom line of the paneled shank. Most classic iterations of the Bulldog position beadlines around the middle of the bowl, demarcating a taper toward the rim. In this pieces, though, Mummert orients the beadlines on the rim itself, while most of the bowl flares upward before suddenly tapering at the top. Fashioned from jet-black morta, this piece presents a classy color palette commended by a section of pale ivorite along the stem base.-Truett Smith
