Werner Mummert: Sandblasted Natural Hawkbill
Product Number: 002-560-0214
A relatively conservative approach form someone who pushes boundaries with such frequency and acclaim, this Hawkbill from Werner Mummert displays remarkable ring grain in a deep, tactile blast that will keep your finger pads as well as your eyes occupied. It's in its natural, briar coloration, which would have been impossible were the surface of the stummel not pristine and flawless. The famous drooping bent shank of the Hawkbill shape is more conservatively employed in this example, with the transition maintaining the bowl's shape with a tight transition, the shank starting the pointed incline that is left in triangular relief at the heel, making it narrower at the bowl than at the mouthpiece and further emphasizing the excellent shaping of the bowl. The shank is paneled along the sides, keeping a domed aspect above and below, with a light band of smooth briar at the end of the shank matching the smooth flat rim of the bowl.
Of particular appeal is the half-saddle mouthpiece, which maintains the lower curvature of the shank in profile, and its upper portion is reduced in a half circle rather than with a straight-lined declension. Well-balanced, light in hand and presumably in the teeth, with one of the most consistent and beautiful sandblasts I've been privileged to see, this is a pipe that does everything right, taking the best that Mother Nature can offer and rendering it in a form that's the best humanity can apply.- Chuck Stanion
