Werner Mummert: Sandblasted Bulldog
Product Number: 002-560-0217
Presented here is Werner Mummert's signature take on the Bulldog. The German carver's iconic interpretation of the shape is most characterized by the diamond shank's panels extending into the lower bowl and the rim's high-set taper. The paneling of the heel promotes a striking point at the fore, furthering the profile's angular disposition, and the rim begins its sudden taper much higher up the bowl than in traditional takes on the form. In this particular piece, the bowl is noticeably canted forward, and the shank is rendered exceptionally broad, creating an optical illusion of sorts depending on one's vantage point: In profile the shape seems quite trim and streamlined, while from above, the wide breadth is muscular and rivals that of the bowl itself. All dressed in a crisp, ring grain-defining sandblast, the dark stain is accented by the vulcanite stem's crimson hue, fitting into Werner's penchant for colorful palettes.-Truett Smith
