Werner Mummert: Smooth Bent Brandy with Tagua Nut Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-560-0248
We rarely have the pleasure of seeing a Brandy from Werner Mummert, maybe a few per decade, and according to our archives, this is only the second smooth bent Brandy we've ever had from the inventive German carver. While certainly more classic in shape than many of his other designs, this pipe does not disappoint when it comes to beauty, craftsmanship, and uniqueness. The bowl is quite plump in proportion to the rest of the pipe, and the line work is akin to Danish pipe design, with distinctive cheeking at the transition and a lifted heel that defines the shank's extension into the lower bowl. Werner has brought the shank to a point under the heel, and as the lines draw rearward, they first dip down gracefully before lifting into an upturned shank. A very gently downturned saddle stem of black vulcanite completes the seductive profile, softly directing my gaze back towards the rich beauty of the stummel.
A deep, walnut contrast stain and smooth finish adorn the stummel, dressing the briar in a luxurious coat while allowing the brilliant grain to be admired. Flame grain rises upward in concert all around the bowl, terminating in flecks of birdseye on the rim. Birdseye is concentrated in the heel as well, and the flames adorn the flanks of the shank, gesturing toward a thin accent of tagua nut that provides elegant contrast. A rare, classically-inclined beauty from a talented craftsman, this piece will make a fine centerpiece to any collection.
