Werner Mummert: Smooth Bulldog with Black Palm Tobacco Pipe

This Bulldog rendition is a signature shape for Werner Mummert, the German carver's portfolio full of versatile, creative renderings of the traditionally muscular shape. In this iteration, he keeps the beadlines high up on the bowl just beneath the domed rim, whereas in some renderings, the artisan situates them on the rim itself. The bowl's sharp, angular heel and oval panels sloping upward from the base lend a geometrical disposition, while the nearly razor-sharp facets of the diamond shank are crisp and pronounced. It strikes a structured, streamlined profile, with the stummel wearing an auburn contrast stain that highlights stunning grain, including a plethora of beautiful birdseye freckling the rim and shank. Further accentuating this piece is a band of black palm by the shank end along with a white ring along the stem base, lending even more charm to this piece.
