Werner Mummert: Sandblasted Brandy Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-560-0297

Known for crafting eclectic, innovative pipes that challenge the imagination, Werner Mummert carves pipes that are frequently quite colorful and dynamically shaped, with this alluring Brandy being a fine example of his considerable skill. Juxtaposing geometrically structured angles and supple curves, it's rife with all the flourishing details one expects from the German artisan's compositions.

The softly rounded, gently tilted bowl features the low, plump mass and easy taper to the rim of the classic shape, with a hint of Danish influence observed. A trim panel beneath the heel widens a bit through the shank underside, yet appears in silhouette as a straight line, the shaping evoking an optical illusion of sorts, a common motif in Mummert's work. An angled, low-set transition gives rise, literally, to a linear, sharply inclined shank that reaches a height nearly equal to that of the bowl's rim. The expanding profile is topped by a tall, broad stem of brindled vulcanite, all of which results in a unique, bespoke rendition of the Brandy design. The stummel is wearing one of the carver's stunning sandblasts, the modernist crimson stain showing off gorgeous ring grain around the bowl, while tight-knit, angled grain is dramatically pronounced throughout the shank. This is a one-of-a-kind shape that will hopefully be soon repeated.
