Werner Mummert: Smooth Bulldog Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-560-0304
German artisan Werner Mummert is known for his boundary-pushing and experimental style, but underneath his avant-garde flair is a bedrock of high-quality engineering and intricate finishing techniques. While Mummert offers a variety of eclectic shapes, his signature interpretation of the Bulldog may be his most recognizable, as the German carver renders the design with an added sense of geometry and sharpness. This particular piece here is a perfect encapsulation of his style and approach to the shape.
This pipe's ultra-crisp profile is quintessentially Mummert. The carver's use of panels and incredibly firm ridgelines lend the heel an architectural structure and a distinctive "V" shape. Said heel mirrors the sharp lines of the diamond shank, both of which contrast against the rounded features of the tall, subtly flaring bowl. Like most of his renditions of the shape, Mummert orientates the form's wrapping beadlines on the rim itself, just outside of the inflation that occurs nearer to the chamber. While Mummert is known for his extra-craggy sandblasts, this piece wears a smooth, honey-hued natural finish that highlights tight bands of flame grain around the bowl and pinpricks of birdseye along the rim. A saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite, with a colorful base of brindled hues, tops off the design and complements the bright complexion of the briar for a classy, harmonious color palette. --Davin Hylton
