Werner Mummert: Sandblasted Canted Billiard Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-560-0351
Compared to his stylized Bulldogs and modernist reverse Calabash Pokers, this Billiard from Werner Mummert is somewhat reserved, though no less innovative, easily recognized as the work of the celebrated German carver. The finish and color palette in particular reflect Mummert's signature style — the sandblast prompting deeply grooved ring grain to wrap the bowl and the dark stain of the stummel contrasted tastefully by a stem of scarlet vulcanite. The bowl is quite unique in this piece, displaying a strong forward cant augmented by an upward taper that draws attention to a plump midriff and cheeked transition, approaching Brandy territory. The round shank is just slightly elongated and, paired with its abbreviated stem, is roughly a millimeter away from a Lovat. This singular combination of features makes this a playful reimagining of the classic shape done in true Mummert fashion.
