Winslow: Crown Partially Rusticated Freehand (Viking)

Product Number: 002-036-1933

Although this Poul Winslow offering resembles a bent Pot in profile, it's the Danish carver's use of ridgelines and bold approach to shaping that pushes this piece into Freehand territory. Three ridgelines can be found along the fore, aft, and right flank, giving the muscular, forward urging bowl a sturdy feel in hand. Striated rustication occupies the slightly rounded base and offers plenty of tactile enjoyment in hand. The thick, curling shank gradually flares out towards the high-kicking saddle stem, with its domed base sitting on top of the shank face that has also been finished in a striated rustication for a subtle accenting touch. There's no shortage of flame grain here either as streaks of it engulf the bowl, handsomely highlighted underneath one of Poul's signature contrast stains.
