Winslow: 2019 Smooth Pipe of the Year with Silver (014)
Product Number: 002-036-1961
While Poul Winslow's previous Pipes of the Year have primarily been plump-bowled or gestural in their shaping, 2019's limited edition series takes a firm-lined, architectural approach to the Cherrywood. The bowl is octagonally paneled, each crisp ridgeline traveling with precision from the broad, softly inflated rim down to the flattened, angled heel. Said bowl also exhibits a strong degree of forward cant thanks to the orientation of the base underneath, giving the sturdy design a dynamic presence in profile. Poul has also done a magnificent job of maximizing the grain of this particular briar block. Seas of swirling birdseye dominate the heel and rim, while a fascinating array of straight grain is visible along each individual panel. Winslow has dressed the stummel in a smoky, walnut contrast stain and tastefully topped everything off with a bright band of sterling silver along the shank end.- Jeffery Sitts
