Winslow: 2019 Smooth Pipe of the Year with Silver (017)
Product Number: 002-036-1964
Poul Winslow's Pipes of the Year are always impressive, showcasing the Danish carver's deft shaping, exquisite finishing techniques, and his stellar accent work. For 2019's limited edition series, Poul has crafted a sturdy, muscular take on the Cherrywood that expertly highlights his five decades of pipemaking experience. The bowl displays a fair bit of forward cant and is able to sit stably on flat surfaces due to the flattened, angled base. The series of eight panels that surround the bowl further set this example apart from other Cherrywood designs which often tend to be fairly minimalist in their execution. The crisp, precise ridgelines provide a firm, yet remarkably natural feel in hand and demonstrate Poul's ability to take a classic shape and make it all his own. A smoky, walnut stain covers the stummel, with birdseye populating the inflated rim and slanted heel while each individual panel frames a lively array of windswept flame grain. Winslow has then tastefully accented everything with a broad band of sterling silver, offering some brilliant contrast against the piece's primarily dark color palette.- Jeffery Sitts
