Winslow: Smooth Freehand (Private Collection)
Product Number: 002-036-1974
Poul Winslow's Private Collection designation is the Danish artisan's most prestigious stamp, reserved for pieces that he considers superlative examples of grain and form. This Freehand was certainly deserving of the high honor and hearkens back to Poul's early days when he got his start working under Preben Holm, the late carver who helped popularize the Fancy Freehand style. While the shaping is undeniably impressive, it was most certainly guided by the briar's grain orientation and Poul is a master at coaxing out stunning grain from any block he works with. The broad, fanning flanks features a striking array of flame grain and create the illusion that the bowl is massive. But when viewed from an aerial perspective, the bowl is dramatically compressed with a single ridgeline outlining its shaping and framing the gorgeous grain. While plateau is typically oriented so that it's placed along the rim or shank face, Poul has here shaped the briar so that it adorns the entire heel with a small patch along the shank's underside. Said shank features a small notch just before the transition and kicks upward to meet the downturned saddle stem. Just a stellar piece that embodies Winslow's immense creativity and shaping skills.- Jeffery Sitts
