Winslow: Smooth Prince with Silver (D) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-036-2508
Many of Poul Winslow's shapes showcase a large, robust style that is replete with fluting channels, defined ridges, or crisp panels, making this Prince rendition a much more conservative piece from the Danish carver. Not only this, but we've yet to see a Prince from him before, making this pipe quite the rarity in his portfolio. The design here is quite soft and very Danish, with a languid central line from button to rim that becomes a touch more dramatic toward the latter, with the stem curving gently as per the profile's standard. The stummel shows a supple kind of curvature, with the heel sweeping upward into the bowl in a way that reminds me of the Scoop shape, though given some lift at the heel which pushes the bowl further into prominence. A warm mahogany contrast stain dresses the briar, revealing a striking band of flame grain that wraps around the stummel from shank end to shank end, framing the bowl and leading the eye to a rim and topside that is covered in a beautiful field of birdseye. This warm color palette is contrasted quite nicely by a band of silver at the shank end, as well as a black dome of acrylic pushing out from it, with the amber hues of the stem tying the two halves of this piece together.
