Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Bent Stack (0806)
Product Number: 002-811-0013
The first Stack we've seen from Wojtek Pastuch, this svelte piece is small and light with a low-profile sandblast. Sometimes when you first pick up a pipe you realize that what you're holding is special, and that's the circumstance here. Every curve and angle is precise. The undercurve is especially fetching, with an even and smooth flow from mouthpiece to rim, beautifully echoed by the low transition and lifting shank. The curvature of the bowl is extraordinarily easy for a pipemaker to fumble; the slightest misstep in a pipe with such reduced proportions would be disastrous, but Pastuch demonstrates his skill with a tall bowl revealing perfect curves from heel to rim. And speaking of the rim, it's generously rounded and smooth for a little contrast to the sandblast. In terms of grain, it doesn't get much better. It's oriented with birdseye at the heel and consistently rising stacks of growth rings rising to the rim along with vertical grain peeking through the texture everywhere. The saddle bit completes a sinuous S-curve that is natural and pleasing in hand.- Chuck Stanion
