Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Bent Brandy with Mammoth (0849)
Product Number: 002-811-0026
I've been quite impressed with the work of Wojtek Pastuch. The young Polish carver has immediately developed and stepped into his own style of carving after having spent time with both Mimmo Romeo in Italy and Tom Eltang in Denmark, honing his technical skills and learning from the expertise of those two men. Wojtek's portfolio is pleasantly vast — ranging from lithe, whimsical takes on classic shapes, with streamlined profiles and pencil-like shanks, to beefier, more compact numbers that offer hearty proportions and stout features.
This bent Brandy caters to that latter style, presenting an overall length of under four and a half inches while still offering a generous chamber within its muscular form. The lithely downturned stem and canted bowl lend the piece an inherent sense of forward momentum, said dynamism adding some sleekness to the robust heel and shank and thick insulating walls. It's a piece that aligns with the Danish school, evident in its supple curves and rounded lines. The finish emphasizes this Danish inspiration too; Pastuch has dressed it in a low-profile sandblast, dark-stained to highlight the inflated, ruby-tinged rim and pale mammoth accent at the shank end. Continuing the warm motif at the rim, Wojtek has fitted the stummel to a stem of striated cumberland, even going as far as to stain the shank face to match the rim. It's that kind of attention to detail and those "unnecessary" aesthetic touches that really show the Polish carver's skill and commitment to the craft.-Truett Smith
