Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Bent Egg (0844)
Product Number: 002-811-0035
With a style that ranges from the absurd to quite classic, Wojtek Pastuch here presents a bent Egg that's on the more traditional end of his shaping spectrum. That said, it still maintains the Polish carver's playful approach to pipemaking combined with his expert craftsmanship and impressive attention to detail. The entire profile is marked by a heavy degree of forward momentum — the stem and shank combination curling into a bowl that's considerably forward of cant, continuing the form's dynamic stance. Slightly bulging about the flanks, the bowl itself is a slender iteration of the Egg, with a subtle flare just before the rim lending a floral disposition that reminds me of the Tulip design. In hand, then, the sandblast is everything lovers of dramatic texture could hope for, deep grooves and rounded ridges exciting the palm and giving the silhouette a visually rippling motif. There's plenty of chamber underneath the rim, which has been smooth polished and warm-stained to match the striated hues of the cumberland stem, and it's the stem in particular that gave me a second's pause: Domed at the base, it looks very much like an army mount. However, upon disassembly it's clear that Wojtek only meant to emulate this look, as the domed portion and tapered bit are, in fact, one piece entirely. Beautiful work.-Truett Smith
