Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Speared Snail with Ivorite (0941)
Product Number: 002-811-0054
Wojtek Pastuch is one of the most creative and gifted carvers in the modern pipe making era with pieces like his playful Groot and evocative Witch's Hat design serving as excellent examples. This Speared Snail takes the Polish artisan's imaginative shaping and expert craftsmanship to greater heights with the gestural, Egg-like bowl being perhaps the most traditional aspect of this piece. Following the transition, the tail curls upward, nearly back toward the bowl before sprouting outward into a claw-like shape. The shank is a lengthy, creamy-hued piece of ivorite and pierces through the tail before joining the bowl and stands out in stark contrast against the rest of the piece's dark color palette.
While this pipe is undeniably impressive and a stunning example of Wojtek's artistry, it's easy to overlook the smaller details. The smooth rim is neatly chamfered and finished in a warm walnut hue for a subtle accenting touch. The sandblasted finish is crisp and texturally intriguing, with vertical waves of ring grain rippling across the bowl's flanks. The hand cut stem flares outward to its fishtail lip button, and is sleek and engineered for optimal smoking comfort. It's a superlative piece from Pastuch and one that could easily serve as the centerpiece of any collection just from the design alone. But it's designed to be smoked and having been designed by a skilled craftsman like Wojtek, there's no question it will perform admirably.- Jeffery Sitts
