Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Lumberman (1014)
Product Number: 002-811-0058
Wojtek Pastuch is an incredibly gifted carver, possessing the ability and imagination to craft some of the most creative and evocative Freehand designs we've ever seen. But it's the Polish artisan's classic shapes that appeal to me the most and this robust, lengthy Lumberman is a particularly enticing composition. It maintains the shape's characteristic oval shank and abbreviated saddle stem, both elements drawing focus toward the tall, deep-chambered bowl up front. The sandblasted finish is outstanding on this piece, its craggy texture and wild, rippling grain patterns reminiscent of vintage Patent-era Dunhills. Undulating waves of grain flow across the bowl's flanks and along the sides of the shank, providing an engaging tactile experience in hand. For a tasteful accenting touch, Pastuch has stained the rim a smooth Bruyere hue to match the trim band of smooth briar along the shank-end.- Jeffery Sitts
