Wojtek Pastuch: Smooth Bent Egg (1013) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-811-0061
Most of Wojtek Pastuch's smooth pipes wear a deep, ruby-tinged stain, but occasionally, the Polish artisan will instead opt for a more vibrant, honey-blonde stain for vivid grain definition and a brighter overall palette. Such was the case for this bent Egg rendition — a welcome choice, as the finish brings out the best of the block's cross grain and birdseye. The overall shaping fits in well to Pastuch's other bent Eggs, marked by a supple softness that calls to mind Danish pipe design. The profile is rather compact, with the shank curling upward into the stem's recurve, while the bowl urges forward in harmonic balance. Though abbreviated in length, this piece features a generously sized bowl and chamber.
When Wojtek crafts more traditionally inclined shapes, such as this piece, he often contrasts such classicism with non-traditional elements, such as striking accents, dramatic finishes, or a blending of shapes' defining characteristics. It adds individuality to his pipes and ensures his creative style is still evident even when rendering pipe chart standards. In the case of this bent Egg, the orientation of the briar's natural plateau presents a highly unique touch: Instead of positioning it along the rim or on the underside as many carvers do, Pastuch rotated this briar block to poise the plateau across the bowl's fore and right flank. It adds a subtle texture and contrasting color palette, intermingling with the whorls of birdseye and making for a unique use of the briar's natural plateau.-Truett Smith
