Wojtek Pastuch: Smooth Bent Dublin (1028)
Product Number: 002-811-0066
A graceful and conveniently sized bent Dublin, this offering from Wojtek Pastuch exemplifies his appreciation for shape-chart standards and his distinctive approach when crafting them. Often times, Pastuch imbues his Dublin shapes with a strong dose of creative whimsy, typically though the use of accenting materials. In this particular rendition, the Polish carver leaves it free of alternative mediums, instead using his shaping skill as a craftsman do all the necessary accenting. And he has certainly delivered in that regard, fashioning an exquisite and beautifully shaped piece. The bowl gradually flares up from its lifted heel, with streaks of vertical grain rising with the bowl's natural flare and eventually erupting into the craggy plateau that crowns the asymmetric rim.
I particularly love the color palette Wojtek chose for this piece as the stummel's rich, ruby stain is seamlessly continued by the cumberland saddle stem's red and black tones. At first glance, it almost appears as if this pipe was just one piece with the stummel and stem fashioned from the same material. The mouthpiece features a single expansion ring to interrupt the visual flow, while its shaping also echoes the chamfered portion of the inner rim. Pastuch's pipes are conceived and constructed with meticulous care, impressive ingenuity, and brilliant creativity — elements that can readily be admired with this piece.- Jeffery Sitts
