Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Bent Egg (1023)
Product Number: 002-811-0069
With a style that ranges from the eccentric to quite classic, Wojtek Pastuch here presents a bent Egg that's on the more traditional end of his shaping spectrum. That said, it still maintains the Polish carver's playful approach to pipe making combined with his expert craftsmanship and impressive attention to detail. The entire profile is marked by a heavy degree of forward momentum — the stem-and-shank combination curling into a bowl that's considerably forward of cant, continuing the form's dynamic stance. Slightly bulging about the flanks, the bowl itself is a slender iteration of the Egg, with a subtle flare just before the rim lending a floral disposition that reminds me of the Tulip design.
In hand, then, the sandblast is everything lovers of dramatic texture could hope for, deep grooves and rounded ridges exciting the palm and giving the silhouette a visually rippling motif. There's plenty of chamber underneath the chamfered inner rim, which has been smooth polished and warm stained to match the striated hues of the cumberland stem. The mouthpiece's gentle downturn balances out the bowl's forward-urging momentum and offers excellent balance for hands-free smoking. It's a piece that's full of the soft-lined dynamism often seen in Danish pipe design as well as Wojtek's personal style, the craggy blast showcasing the Polish carver's immense talent in the blasting cabinet.-Truett Smith
