Wojtek Pastuch: Smooth Bent Dublin (1040)
Product Number: 002-811-0070
Polish carver Wojtek Pastuch boasts a broad stylistic range across his portfolio, with dramatic Freehands appearing alongside more traditional designs like this bent Dublin. Even among his classic renditions, though, Wojtek impresses with subtle distinction and artistic creativity. For example, he fashions bent Dublins that cater to the more stout, muscular nature of this smooth example, but he also produces those that are lean and more angular. Such stylistic diversity makes each new pipe we receive from Pastuch a delightful surprise, and the artisan never fails to impress by flexing his creative muscles and craftsmanship acumen. Regarding this particular bent Dublin, my eye is most drawn to the composition's consistent undercurve, beautifully framing the piece as it flows seamlessly from underneath the shank and into the bowl's fore. Such shaping allows this pipe to rest naturally in hand, and the hearty proportions support said ergonomics. The stout insulating walls create a broad rim on which Pastuch has displayed the briar's natural plateau. To contrast that rugged texture, he left the shank face flat and smooth, accenting the piece without the need for alternative materials and echoing the parallel orientation of the cumberland stem's crisp expansion ring.-Truett Smith
