Wojtek Pastuch: Sandblasted Billiard with Horn (1143) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-811-0090
Polish artisan Wojtek Pastuch has quite the history with pipes, being an avid appreciator of their form and function since he was 15 years old, going on to start a collection and do repairs for himself, simply for the fun of it. As he went on, his passion grew, and his desire for knowledge increased, leading him to Tom Eltang, whom he worked with for a time, expanding his experience and knowledge base significantly. He shows an affinity for classic forms in his work, though he is equally as talented in crafting pieces of a more avant-garde style, though this straight Billiard falls into the former camp.
Certainly showing Eltang's influence, this piece is very much embodies some Danish flair, with a svelte build throughout its aft side that balances out the heartiness of the bowl. Coming in at over five and a half inches, this is by no means a small pipe, though its light weight contributes to an air of practicality. The stem here leads into a mount of horn and is quite sleek, and the horn flares at the end, creating some nice visual separation between the two and offering a touch of firm rigidity in what is otherwise a fairly softly detailed piece. The shank proper is quite trim, separated from its fitment with a small ring of vulcanite, and showcases a wide transition that allows plenty of room to drape a thumb.
The bowl that grows out of the transition is an eye-catching two inches tall and rests on a rounded, gently arced heel whose curve continues through the fore, working with the aft side of the bowl to inflate it in profile a bit and give the fingers an excellent place to grasp. The rim here is gently inflated, and is chamfered into the capacious chamber, creating a nice domed look that bolsters the softer elements of this piece. Dressing the briar is a rugged, inky sandblast that creates a wonderfully crisp texture over much of the stummel, save for the rim, which is finished smooth, and acts with the horn at the shank end to cultivate a charmingly rugged, almost Old World aesthetic.
