Wolfgang Becker first got the pipemaking bug from viewing the works of Lars Ivarsson, and deciding that if he could not (at the time) afford to buy such a beautifully designed briar, he would learn how to make one. It was a tall order, to say the least, and suffice to say that what Wolfgang has accomplished is impressive - and all the more so considering he's done it as an autodidact. Lars's influence can still be seen in Becker's work to this day, but it is accompanied with a distinctiveness and originality, a certain individual character, which no doubt is a result of Wolgang's years of lone-wolf (no pun intended) process of refinement and discovery.
