Yang Kun: Smooth Bent Pot (Signature) (2233) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-905-0008

After being introduced to the world of artisan pipes and their carving in 2010, Chinese artisan Yang Kun was immediately obsessed, going on to carve pipes of his own and quitting his job as a makeup artist in the entertainment industry to pursue pipe making full-time. Training at the hands of fellow artisan Hongjian Qiu, who taught him the fundamentals of drilling, draft hole funneling, and contrast staining, Kun's observance of the work of his peers and deep love for the Danish aesthetic brought him inspiration. This bent Pot combines that inspiration with Yang's personal style to offer a handsomely harmonious composition.

This pipe showcases a wonderful juxtaposition of soft and firm lines throughout, though mainly at the intersection of the shank and bowl, with the transition acting as a stylistic marker to solidly separate the bowl from the shank and stem. Said transition is more than wide enough to accommodate a digit, and its sweeping shape introduces it with a nice curvature, belying the sharp line that runs through its midsection. This line is the result of the shank and stem's compressed hexagonal paneling, keeping the outline of the combination extremely low-profile and substantially rigid, as the topmost ridge flows into the base of the bowl and outlines the transition. Despite the firmness of these ridges, the shank itself is curved, lifting gently to meets the vibrant green and black hues of the vulcanite saddle stem and making these hard lines a bit softer. At the fore, the ridges framing the lower flanks of the shank and traveling through the middle of the underside meet at the heel and form a point, effectively balancing the bowl atop a peaked edge. The bowl's balancing of this firmness is readily apparent, as it flares, Dublin-like, into a broad rim whose edge is denoted by a beautiful roundness before being softly domed to the edge of the chamber. Squat and expansive, the bowl acts as a wonderful canvas for the warm auburn stain dressing the stummel, with flame and straight grain surrounding the walls, while the rim itself is awash with birdseye, matching the topmost surfaces of the shank.
