Yang Kun: Smooth Bent Dublin (Signature) (2243) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-905-0010
Originally a makeup artist for television and film, Yang Kun has applied his aesthetic sensibilities to pipe making since 2012. Over the last decade, Kun has shown impressive talent, drawing on the work of the Danish masters as well as his Chinese contemporaries to create a unique style that blends striking features of both, particularly in his use of bamboo and sleek ridgelines. This just-bent Dublin is a fine example of his stylistic fusion, featuring a chubby bowl with walls that flare out toward a broad domed rim. The bowl rests on a flat heel that transitions seamlessly into an oval shank, paneled on the bottom to create a sleek ridge that runs the length of the shank, continued by the vulcanite saddle stem. The upper half of the shank is smoothly rounded, also mirrored by the stem which is hand-cut and tapers to a fine bit that offers an eminently comfortable clench. Dressed in a rich auburn stain, the stummel is stamped with Kun's signature, marking it as one his highest graded offerings. The briar itself boasts impeccable straight and flame grain all around the bowl, crowned with tightly swirled birdseye at the rim that also runs the length of the shank. Between the quality briar and craftsmanship on display, this piece is sure to make a more than welcome addition to any pipe collection.-Gabriel Bass
