Yeti: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Mammoth (680) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-660-0151
Micah Cryder of Yeti Pipes is one of the most talented young artisans in America. After smoking his first pipe at the age of 17, Cryder fanned the flames of an already extant fascination for the art of pipes and pipe making, later quitting his barista job at Starbucks and leaving his university to focus on his pipe making full-time, an effort that paid in dividends. Now Cryder is a skilled, respected artisan with a good deal of experience whose playfulness and inventiveness are reflected in his pipes: including this bent Apple. The saddle stem that begins the lines of this piece is the sole point in the construction of this pipe where I can say it is lithe. As soon as the stem meets the stummel, we see an expansion in the form of a ring of fossilized mammoth bone, its roundness giving the base of the stem a place to nestle into before it gives way to the shank proper. The shank end is flared at its end, tapering as it dips into the transition whose subtle cheeking enhances the kind of snug, tightly knit motif which the ring of bone began. The bowl is very large, with a high-set waistline that sits at a bit of an angle, not angling the rim, but rather causing it to grow upward at differing degrees of slope which keeps the chamber straight. A composition that is both soft and muscular, this pipe is truly a display of the massive talent held by Cryder, and the dark sandblast that dresses the briar reveals a cross-grain structure that showcases blasted birdseye on either flank of the bowl and vertical growth rings on the fore and aft, with the left flank specifically looking like a rippling sunburst array: a wonderful combination of both.-John McElheny
