Yeti: Smooth Horn with Bakelite (677) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-660-0153

Over the past several weeks, Micah "Yeti" Cryder has been navigating a self-admitted "Horn phase," experimenting with different Horn renditions across various finishes and color palettes. This particular example honors Bo Nordh's famed iteration, defined by faceted flanks and a consistent curvature through the stem and stummel to evoke the look of an animal's natural horn — rather than keeping the stem straight or, even, turning it slightly downward as some renditions reveal. Micah has combined his own creative style with a number of the legendary Swedish carver's signature shapes over the years, including renditions of the Elephant's Foot and Sphinx designs, and this Horn serves to expand the American artisan's portfolio, further his reputation for stunning craftsmanship, and reinforce his penchant for vivid color palettes and use of Bakelite.

As mentioned, Bo's Horn shape displays an ever-arching silhouette, seamlessly integrating the stem into the taper of the stummel, and this Yeti rendition adheres to that characteristic feature. Similarly, the flanks are defined by crisp facets that extend all the way from the rim to the button, tapering in perfect harmony with the overall shape itself. Revealing gorgeous striations of grain, these facets showcase Micah's following of the briar's natural grain as the gradually arcing trajectory of the grain matches the pipe's shape in profile. Where Micah has made this piece his own, however, is at the rim: Instead of showcasing a continuous flare, as Bo's design typically does, the rim here is demarcated by a ridgeline at the fore and a domed aspect that curls back toward the chamber. In contrast, a crisp panel defines the aft, and a sharper curve below creates a more noticeable transition that lends further prominence to the rim. Such intricate and complex facet work is something Micah impresses with often across his pipes, and those aspects separate this unique Horn from other renditions.

Lastly, when viewing this pipe in profile, the rim flares consistently outward, but when viewed from above, the rim's aft is actually more narrow than the fore — in essence creating two separately flaring aspects depending on the vantage point and adding even more complexity and intrigue to the design. An overall broad shape, this piece provides welcomed canvas on which to display dizzying birdseye along the top and underside, all brought out by Micah's golden mahogany contrast stain — the finish's lighter hues complementing the cream-and-caramel swirls of the Bakelite stem.
