Yuwei: Smooth Volcano with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-842-0003
It's often easy to see whom an artisan admires based on the design cues they display in their pipes. In the case of this Volcano from Yuwei Huang, the Taiwanese carver has clearly drawn influence from the great Hiroyuki Tokutomi. Hours could be spent discussing Toku's paradigm-shifting approach to pipemaking and his influence on today's high-grade artisan scene, but suffice to say that the Japanese master often incorporates an echoed effect when transitioning from the shank face to the stem base. Here, Yuwei presents a similar aesthetic, shaping the boxwood accent on the stem to match perfectly with the broadly splayed orientation of the shank face. It makes for a wildly organic aesthetic and is something of a signature in Tokutomi's work, and Huang has applied it here to great effect. The curves of the stem base and shank face inform the bowl's forward-urging posture and undulating heel — full of dynamic momentum that's followed by the windswept grain pattern.-Truett Smith
