Yuwei: Rusticated Horn
Product Number: 002-842-0012
Most times when carvers employ a sandblasted or rusticated finish, they seek to maintain the profile's smooth lines, requiring that the finish be applied at just the right depth. In this Horn, however, Yuwei Huang has sought the opposite — defining the profile by an incredibly deeply grooved rustication that coils up the stummel, creating a wavy, ribbed silhouette. The crisp ripples terminate just before the inflated rim, the final ridgeline undulating around the top of the bowl and flicking upward into a lip at the aft side of the rim. The texture offers an extremely stimulating in-hand feel, while the overall shape remains quite comfortable when held. Huang has dressed it in a dark palette, accenting it with highlights of lighter stain and spots of plateau at the rim and shank end — the latter of which the carver has creatively extended into the stem base.-Truett Smith
