Yuwei: Smooth Tomato with Bamboo and Boxwood
Product Number: 002-842-0014
Although we've seen Yuwei Huang fashion the Tomato previously, having crafted a traditionally inclined Danish inspired rendition as well as a playfully asymmetric iteration, this particular offering may just be the most visually striking one yet. The bamboo shank extension is certainly the most eye catching aspect at play as it features at least a few dozen nodes that wrap around the organic medium and have been stained a lovely ruby color. Said bamboo is then topped off by a boxwood accent, its pale color expertly complementing the light tone of the bamboo. And while there's no obvious asymmetry at work on this piece, the boxwood accent is oriented at an angle that gives the impression of asymmetry from the smoker's perspective. It's a subtle, yet effective touch that doesn't distract from the beautiful aesthetics or the superb shaping at play.
The plump bowl prioritizes breadth over height and wears its waistline high, yet manages to feel remarkably comfortable when wrapped around the thumb and forefinger. However, what stands out most about the bowl is the subtle ridgeline that seemingly originates out of nowhere along the fore, coming to a point along the top of the chamfered rim. This piece is also impressively light weight and compact for all the elements that are brilliantly displayed throughout, making this an excellent, versatile introduction for anyone who has yet to experience Yuwei's work or a pipe that will fit right in with any of the Taiwanese artisan's other pieces.- Jeffery Sitts
