Yuwei: Smooth Bent Dublin with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-842-0015
While the bent Dublin is a shape chart standard, Yuwei Huang has explored a variety of unique ways to present the classic form, delivering interpretations that are highly organic, merge American and Danish styles, and even fashioned one with a striking dual finish. Here, the Taiwanese carver has crafted a rendition that simultaneously blends elegant, sweeping lines with robust proportions, combining Danish shaping cues with the American Industrial style's penchant for hearty, muscular forms. The thick, round shank's curling underside gradually leads the eye to the dramatically flaring bowl up front. The broad rim is impressively concave in its shaping, giving the bowl a floral appearance in profile as if Yuwei grew this pipe in a garden and plucked it when the time was just right. Such a bold design worked out brilliantly in regards to maximizing the grain orientation of this briar block as streaks of lively flame grain engulf the bowl, traveling all the way from the lifted heel to the rim's firm ridgeline, where a sea of swirling birdseye is sprawled out. The shank end has then been accented by a ring of yellow boxwood, echoed at the right flank which bears two darker inlays of the medium.- Jeffery Sitts
