Yuwei: Smooth Acorn with Bamboo and Spalted Maple
Product Number: 002-842-0020
A gestural and highly stylized Acorn interpretation, this piece from Yuwei Huang demonstrates the organic stylings that are readily present in the Taiwanese artisan's work. The bowl wears its waistline quite high and is canted forward in dramatic fashion, with a well-defined ridgeline encircling the rim to give it some additional visual prominence. The transition sits neatly tucked away underneath the bowl's bulging aft, creating negative space in profile that further emphasizes the bowl's bulbous disposition.
Perhaps my favorite element about this piece is the bamboo shank extension and the way it's paired to accents of spalted maple. Bamboo is a medium that's well-represented in Yuwei's portfolio and has been used quite creatively on this piece in particular. The bumpy, rugged nodes along each knuckle provide some textural contrast against the stummel's smooth finish. Accents of spalted maple bookend the bamboo, the wood's lighter hue seamlessly blending with the bamboo's coloration though standing out just enough thanks to the spalted maple's distinctive dark streaks. Each individual element of this piece bespeaks Yuwei's talent and creative use of accenting materials.- Jeffery Sitts
