Yuwei: Sandblasted Tomato with Bamboo and Boxwood
Product Number: 002-842-0025
This Tomato from Yuwei Huang is brimming with organicism and textural intrigue, displaying familiar elements that we're accustomed to seeing from the Taiwanese artisan but are particularly impressive on this composition. The bowl is affably plump and strongly canted while maintaining the width expected from the Tomato shape. Cheeking around the transition supports the bowl's roundness, simultaneously accentuating its curvaceous disposition and emphasizing its breadth. Said bowl is finished in a warm, earthy contrast stain, giving definition to the growth rings that climb the bowl's bulging flanks before encountering the smooth rim.
The black bamboo shank extension is one of the most impressive aspects of this piece, offering additional texture, and one of the craggiest sections of bamboo I've seen on one of Yuwei's pipes. The bamboo's dark hue complements the piece's rustic aesthetic, gently curving upward toward the pale boxwood accent that bookends it. There's some subtle asymmetry present in the bamboo's orientation, even more noticeable in the stem's soft curve that continues the bamboo's slightly slanted momentum. Simply a stellar piece from Yuwei, this is a pipe that offers plenty of visual and textural stimulation.- Jeffery Sitts
