Yuwei: Partially Sandblasted Bent Brandy with Silver
Product Number: 002-842-0032
In this bent Brandy, Yuwei Huang has visually separated bowl from shank via a ridgeline that wraps the transition and comes to a point at the heel. Such a design motif is one created by Lars Ivarsson in his Cup and Ball shapes, and it's since been utilized to great effect by the likes of J. Alan, Vladimir Grechukhin, and other artisan carvers, like Yuwei in this piece. Clearly inspired by Ivarsson, the Taiwanese carver has also extended the shank and rendered it quite robust — further emulating the look of Lars' work. The lines of the shank, then, continue into the domed stem base, accentuating the shank's stout shaping and drawing focus to the rounded wedding band of sterling silver. Finally, Yuwei has utilized a dual finish to separate shank from bowl even more dramatically: The shank bears a deep, auburn contrast stain, while the bowl is darker and rippling with blasted growth rings, with the smooth-polished rim subtly uniting bowl and shank as a complete composition.-Truett Smith
