Yuwei: Smooth Acorn with Bamboo and Boxwood
Product Number: 002-842-0038
Taiwanese carver Yuwei Huang leans heavily into the Danish pipe-making tradition with this organic Acorn design. The bowl itself is affably rounded and upright, tapering downward into a pointed heel spur. Out back, however, the form takes a dynamic approach as the bamboo shank extension flicks upward from out of the transition before being balanced out by the stem's downward turn. The fluidity of the shank and stem echoes the bowl's naturalistic posture, with the bamboo flaring outward and lending the profile a strong degree of momentum that, then, flares upward toward the plateau-crowned rim. Dressed in an auburn contrast stain, the bowl boasts a stunning array of flame grain, perfectly following the piece's shaping and its rounded nature is delightful in hand. The design is similar to a previous Acorn we received from Yuwei, which also featured dark bamboo, as seen in this piece, with this one also accented by boxwood to match the lighter tones of the bamboo.-Truett Smith
