Yuwei: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-842-0040
A Taiwanese carver who draws inspiration from the classic Danish tradition and modern American style of pipe design, Yuwei Huang here presents a bent Dublin showcasing characteristics of both of those aesthetic schools. Convex of rim and easy of gesture, the transition and flaring lines of the bowl and shank are soft and supple, calling to mind the work of Danish artisans, but juxtaposed against the subtle ridgelines running through the shank and around the lower bowl, making for a firmly defined heel profile. The proportions, though, fall within the style of certain American carvers — hearty and muscular through the shank, while the bowl's thick, insulating walls support the palm-filling presentation, making for a rather compact piece that still maintains an impressive heftiness. It's all adorned in a formal color palette, contrasting a pearly white accent of mammoth against the stummel's dark sandblast.
