Yuwei: Smooth Pear
Product Number: 002-842-0046
Taiwanese carver Yuwei Huang draws inspiration from Danish and American influences, often favoring an organic aesthetic and intricate finishes, both smooth and sandblasted, sometimes at the same time. This Pear shape strikes a more refined, Danish-inspired profile, with a supple, gently rounded bowl paired to a slightly flaring shank for a piece replete with soft features. A subtle curvature runs from the fore of the concave rim at the bowl through the lifted heel to the bit of the stem, rendering an elegant, seamless whole.
A foot extends from the heel, a subtle nodule, that enables the pipe to sit quite steadily, a testament to Yuwei's understanding of proportions and balance, in terms of both form and practicality. The shank extends from the transition, which showcases a lively bit of cheeking, before giving way to a saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite, complementing the dark chestnut color the stummel. The flowing flame grain across the flanks of the bowl as well as the birdseye that spots the shank and rim are shrouded in a smoky, contrast stain that beautiful accentuates the briar's grain patterns, especially when caught in the right light. The shank end displays a small patch of plateau, a hint of the organic style that Yuwei often employs.--Davin Hylton
