Rivertown Tobacco Works - Dark 70%
Very Well Done
A great all day blend with a dark semi-sweet Chocolate flavor in the simple style of some of the old Codger blends. Easy to pack and light and while it seemed moist out of the bag, it burned very well with just a touch up light or two. Cool and dry to the bottom of the bowl. Light nicotine and no bite. The chocolate is there but not very sweet (the name “Dark 70%” is right on the mark if you know chocolate). Yes you can still taste tobacco. Definitely solid on its own and would probably mix well with your favorite Burley blend or even English blend. In terms of overall presentation and performance it reminds me of the quality aromatic blends from C&D. Give it a try.

Filters & Adaptors - Denicool Filters - Crystals
Works Great
While I have mostly unfiltered pipes in my collection, I do have some filtered ones, and I do enjoy them especially with aromatics. If you like filtered pipes or maybe enjoy the dry smoke of a nice meerschaum or corn cob, you should give these a try in your unfiltered briar pipe. I find they provide a much drier smoke, and with them I don’t need to use pipe cleaners while smoking. To me, they do not change the basic flavor of the tobacco although because the smoke is drier it can bite less and seem milder overall. Give them a try for yourself. You really don’t have much to lose. Cheers.

Captain Black - Royal 7oz
Classic, nostalgic and plain good
30 year pipe enthusiast here. Smokingpipes customer since the beginning. 25 or more of those years was devoted solely to English blends like 965 (primarily the old Murray’s version), Gawith blends like the long gone “Pink Champagne”, Peterson’s Old Dublin, etc. But age (ugh) and changes in taste have sort of redirected me to tobaccos that are light and easy. My father, who was a lifelong pipeman, enjoyed Captain Black Royal very much. I never did. But I have found that it has filled the bill for me lately. The aroma is wonderful (classic and nostalgic pipe), it lights and burns easily, it is easy on the tongue, and while it is somewhat sweet, it still tastes like tobacco. And if you are a lot younger than me, you can grab a can of Captain Black, a large freehand danish pipe (I still have my dad’s 1970s Karl Erik), light it up and be transported in time to an era of leisure suits, “yacht rock” music and restaurants/lounges where pipe smoking was always welcomed! Enjoy!

Oliva - Cuba Aliados Original Robusto
Fantastic Honduran!
I loved the original Cuba Aliados made by Rolando Reyes (yes I’m old). I also love anything from the Camacho family and pretty much anything Honduran. When I saw this new offering I had to try it. Just awesome! Toasty smooth well aged Honduran tobacco. Excellent construction. Perfect balance. Not a pepper bomb, but not wimpy either. Call it Goldilocks (yea I know I’m old - look it up you youngsters). One of the few cigars I have had recently that I felt I needed to review. No hype here folks. Just quality. Underpriced in my opinion.
